August 2024 Member of the Month: Liz Birch

For the month of August, I asked Liz a series of questions to get to know her better, celebrate her accomplishments, and allow her to give others a little behind-the-scenes look at training with me at JM Health and Performance.

Build a picture of your time at JM Health and Performance (When did you start?  How did you find JMHP and what were your feelings that first day?)

I started January of 2023, as a participant of the Total Body Transformation competition. My friend Emily had been encouraging me for months to meet with Jeremy – that I would really get along well with him, and he would help me get back into the gym. I had hesitated because I hadn’t been to the gym in several years, was fairly out of shape, and was really kind of hiding from my reality. When I got the results from my first body scan I was blown away at how high my body fat percentage was. I knew immediately that I needed to take action for my overall health.

What was your “why” when you first started and how have you made progress toward that?

When I got the results of that first scan, as I mentioned, i was shocked. 6 months prior to that scan I had my general lab work drawn, and found my cholesterol levels to be high, my liver enzymes to be slightly elevated and my weight was higher than it had been since I was pregnant with my youngest, who was at that time 14 years old. I knew I needed to make some changes, but I really felt overwhelmed. I had a very demanding career, I rode horses competitively, had 2 kids, a husband and a house to run, and I simply didn’t know when I would prioritize my health. At that first scan, I knew that if I didn’t make my health a priority, things would quickly get a lot harder for me. At 45 years old, I knew that it was time for me to choose my hard. I could do the hard work of prioritizing my health or I could do the hard work of needing to go on medications, had have my health begin to effect my well-being. I dove headfirst into my sessions with Jeremy. I signed up for the works! 3 personal sessions with him, plus diet coaching. I was amazed at how quickly my body started to transform. In the first 2 months, I dropped 13 lbs of fat, and put on 5lbs of lean muscle. I cleaned up my diet, reduced my alcohol consumption, started lifting 3 times a week, walking 10,000 steps a day and truly prioritized my health. At my annual doctors exam that year, my cholesterol was well within healthy range (my doctor was astounded), liver enzymes were normal, and I had 30lbs of positive change. I felt incredibly proud of the work I had done in prioritizing my health.

In what way has Jeremy supported you in achieving your goals?

Although I’ve stopped my personal training sessions with Jeremy, we check in weekly. He is regularly checking on my plan, making changes based on my lifestyle. Jeremy has gone from being my trainer to truly feeling like a friend, someone who cares about me, my family and my success.

Tell us something that most people don’t know about you or a fun fact?

I am the Vice President of Customer Experience for a software company that specializes in the Hospitality industry. It’s incredibly demanding, but I love it!

What are some of your favorite lifts or movements?

I love the deadlift, and squats!

What PRs or accomplishments are you most proud of?

I was so proud of my first chin-up, and a year later, I finally got my first pull-up! It was something I never thought I’d manage!

What’s on your fitness bucket list?

As a woman, I’ve spent most of my life worried about the number on the scale, wanting it to be smaller. I love coming into the gym and getting a scan and seeing my muscle mass grow. I am SO proud of what I’ve built!

What would you say to someone on the fence about joining or just starting with JM Health and Performance?

Prioritize yourself and your health. Jeremy truly listens and understands each clients individual needs, whether you are a high school athlete, or a peri-menopausal woman (and everything in between) Jeremy truly takes the time to work with you, making you feel safe, supported and energized.
